Our prominent client, a leader in the automotive component manufacturing space (OE and after market), is seeking to appoint an experienced Engineering Manager (GMR2) to their Port Elizabeth operation.

Requirements:
  • A relevant Bachelor’s Degree (Mechanical and/or Electrical) or Post-Graduate tertiary qualification or a proven track record of at least 10 years in a maintenance management role
  • A Government Certificate of Competency (Factories)
  • Preferably a seasoned professional in his early 40’s and above
  • Must have a proven track-record in similar roles and also managing diverse and technical resources.
Responsibilities:

Maintenance
  • Implement and control a preventative maintenance system.
  • Compile and manage the maintenance, people, and capital expenditure budgets.
  • Utilize the Maintenance Management System to maximize the availability of production plant.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained in accordance with supplier specifications and within the required timelines and cost parameters.
  • Achieve the targeted equipment availability and performance.

Equipment / Facilities

  • Ensure the provision of adequate mechanical and electrical spares, with clear specifications.
  • Review concepts and designs for modifications, additions, and facilities.
  • Stay updated on new developments in the field of mechanical and electrical engineering.

Quality

  • Conform to the requirements of the quality control system.

APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning)

  • Understand and respond to customer needs, requirements, and expectations, delivering solutions accordingly.
  • Utilize tools such as QFD to review the entire quality planning process and implement a quality planning programme.

Lean Manufacturing

  • Apply lean manufacturing principles, with a deep understanding of structured problem-solving and root cause analysis.

Managing People

  • Ensure the effective utilization of people within the budgeted levels.
  • Commit to coaching, mentoring, and developing staff.
  • Lead and develop the team effectively.

Communication

  • Liaise with representatives from external organizations, companies, and government on matters related to the engineering department.

Safety

  • Act as the Competent Person in terms of the General Machinery Regulation 2 of the OHS Act and Regulations of 1993.
  • Liaise with management and staff on matters related to OHASA and other relevant legislation.
  • Ensure safety standards and housekeeping practices are carried out in accordance with legal and company requirements.

Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure maximum uptime with minimal labor overhead, scrap, and overspend.
  • Manage service contractors effectively.

Succession Planning

  • Implement and maintain an ongoing succession plan for the engineering function to ensure the future sustainability of the department.

Auxillary Activities 

  • Attend various meetings and provide input as required.
  • Conduct investigations in the event of an injury or relevant incident.
  • Perform all relevant administrative functions.

Budgets and Financial Monitoring and Control

  • Be responsible for drafting and executing the annual maintenance budget.
  • Ensure execution and cost control within the agreed expenditure limits.
