Essential Checklist for Job Hunting Success

By Anika Wilson

You might not always be on the lookout for a new job, but with the average person holding 12 different jobs over a 32-year span, it’s likely you’ll need to dive into the job hunt at some point. To make the process as smooth as possible, it’s crucial to stay prepared. Keep these essentials updated and ready to go, so when the time comes, you can act quickly and confidently—without the stress.

Personal Identification:Ensure you have a digital copy of your ID readily accessible on your laptop. If you’ve upgraded from an ID book to a smart card, remember to update the file with the latest version. An outdated ID can delay your application process.

Proof of Qualifications:Scan all your academic certificates and qualifications, or request electronic versions from your institutions. These documents are vital to include with your CV as proof of your credentials.

Driver’s License:If your role requires driving, make sure a scanned copy of your Driver's License is on hand. Keep it current by updating the file whenever you renew your license.

Professional Photo:A clean, professional head-and-shoulders photo is a must for your CV. While an ID photo works, steer clear of casual or playful images—your potential employer will appreciate a polished appearance.

Recent Payslips:Some employers or agencies may request your latest payslip. It's a good habit to request and save these monthly, so you’re not scrambling to get one while job hunting. Plus, it’s a handy way to keep track of your leave days.

Keep Your CV Updated:The golden rule: regularly update your CV. Add any new skills, courses, conferences, or relevant experiences as soon as they happen. You’ll thank yourself later when you don’t have to try to recall details from years ago.

Reliable References:Line up three solid references who can vouch for your skills and character. Make sure they’re aware they might be contacted and are willing to provide a positive reference.
